Mounted Antikbar One sheet vintage travel poster for the now-defunct national airline of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Air Ceylon. It promotes their "Sapphire Service" to London. Poster Details Airline: Air Ceylon was the national flag carrier of Ceylon from 1947 until it ceased operations in 1979 and was replaced by Air Lanka (now SriLankan Airlines). Service: The "Sapphire Service" was the name given to their international long-haul flights, specifically the route connecting Colombo to European destinations like London and Amsterdam, and extending to Sydney in Australia. Aircraft: These long-haul routes utilized aircraft such as the Lockheed L-749 Constellation and later the larger L-1049 Super Constellation, often leased from partner airline KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. Artwork: The poster was created by the Dutch artist Mart Kempers (1924-1993) around the 1950s. The vibrant illustration depicts a stylized, busy London street scene featuring iconic elements like red double-decker buses, traditional street lamps, and a clock tower, with an airplane flying overhead. artist for the "Fly the Sapphire Service to London" Air Ceylon poster is the Dutch artist Mart Kempers (1924–1993). Kempers designed several posters for Air Ceylon's "Sapphire Service" campaign around the 1950s, including this one depicting a busy London street scene and another iconic design featuring an elephant.
