Composition and Context
The poster features an elegantly dressed Parisian woman, believed to be Misia Natanson, the wife of one of the journal's founders, Thadée Natanson. She holds a copy of the magazine next to a scruffy newsboy, with a third figure lurking in the background. The flattened space, bold shapes, and playful typography were inspired by Japanese woodblock prints and represent the democratic philosophy of the Nabis group, to which Bonnard belonged, by bringing art into everyday public life through print media. |
