One sheet Swiss travel poster, designed by artist
Anton Reckziegel (1865–1936), was issued in 1908 to promote a network of three private railway companies in northwestern Switzerland.
Poster Details
Subject: A detailed bird's-eye view map of the Emmental district and the Bernese Mittelland.
Railways Featured: The poster highlights the lines for the Burgdorf-Thun-Bahn (BTB), the Emmenthal-Bahn (EB), and the Solothurn-Münster-Bahn (SMB).
Visual Highlights:
A red line traces the railway tracks through towns like Thun, Burgdorf, and Solothurn.
The horizon is punctuated by the "great Alpine wall," with peaks like the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau clearly labeled.
The inset on the left features a woman in traditional local dress knitting on a bench, meant to anchor the grand landscape in everyday Swiss life.
Production: It was printed by Hubacher & Co. A.G. in Bern as a color lithograph.
Historical Significance
The Burgdorf-Thun-Bahn, featured prominently at the top of the poster, was notable for being the first European standard-gauge railway to be fully electrified when it opened in 1899. Today, these three historic lines are part of the larger BLS group (Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon). |
