UK Quad "Style A" (Volcano) British Quad poster created by artist Frank McCarthy for the 1967 James Bond film, You Only Live Twice.
Here are some fascinating facts about this specific film and its production:
• Near-Fatal Escape: The film's core production team—including producers Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman, director Lewis Gilbert, cinematographer Freddie Young, and production designer Ken Adam—narrowly escaped death while in Japan. They were booked on BOAC Flight 911 but canceled at the last minute to attend an unexpected ninja demonstration. Twenty-five minutes after takeoff, that exact plane disintegrated over Mount Fuji, killing everyone on board.
• The Massive Volcano Set: The iconic volcano lair pictured on the right side of the poster was constructed at Pinewood Studios and cost roughly $1 million in 1966—nearly matching the entire budget of the first Bond film, Dr. No. It was so enormous it required its own internal climate control to clear out fog during shooting.
• The Roald Dahl Connection: Famous children's author Roald Dahl wrote the screenplay. He famously disliked Ian Fleming's original novel, calling it a "travelogue," and essentially discarded the entire book's plot to write a completely new space-hijacking story.
• Custom Toyota Supercar: The legendary Toyota 2000GT featured in the movie was never commercially built as a convertible. Because Sean Connery was 6'2" and couldn't fit inside the standard 45-inch-tall coupe, Toyota specially rushed the modification of two hardtops into open-roof models solely for the production. |
