original 1942 World War II patriotic home-front photograph display mat. Produced by the Patriotic Picture Co., these die-cut paper frames were designed for families to insert a portrait photo of their loved one serving overseas in the center oval.
Key Details & Design Elements
• The Motto: A banner across the top reads "In The Service Of" with standard scroll headers flanking it.
• Central Motif: A large, empty oval cutout intended to showcase a soldier's photograph. An American bald eagle clutches a cluster of American flags directly beneath it.
• Side Elements: Two illustrated U.S. Army soldiers in service uniforms stand at parade rest with rifles flanking the lower half.
• Bottom Vignette: An illustration of the U.S. Capitol building rests behind the bold "U.S. ARMY" banner.
• Authentication Marks: The bottom left corner is marked "COPYRIGHT 1942", and the lower margin lists the manufacturer as the "PATRIOTIC PICTURE CO."
These frames were highly popular during WWII as a way for families to display their national pride and honor their relatives' military service right from the living room. Similar versions were printed for other military branches, including the U.S. Navy. |
