Large concert poster highly collectible 1968 concert poster for the iconic American rock band The Doors and the blues-rock group Canned Heat.
Historical Context & Details
• The Event: This poster promoted a double-billed show titled "Underground Pop Music USA" held on September 14, 1968 (with late/early show variations stretching into September 15).
• The Venue: The concert took place at the Kongresshalle (Messegelände) in Frankfurt, Germany. This historic show marked the only time The Doors performed in Frankfurt while frontman Jim Morrison was still alive.
• The Promoters: The gig was organized by the legendary German concert promotion duo Horst Lippmann and Fritz Rau (billed here alongside SBA).
• The Artist: The vibrant, surrealist artwork was created by world-renowned German graphic designer Günther Kieser. Kieser is legendary in the psychedelic rock era for his bold, dreamlike illustrations, including his famous 1969 Jimi Hendrix "Medusa" poster.
The centerpiece of this design shows a giant, stylized face with a wide-open mouth, using the throat cavity to display the typography for the bands. Because these posters were printed on thin "fly paper" meant to be pasted on town walls, surviving original copies are exceptionally rare and highly sought after by collectors. |
