NATO

NATO - Before (Poster) This is an influential Greek political poster from a folio titled (Here is the Polytechnic) created by famed Greek artist and resistance fighter Georgios Farsakidis. Context & Historical Significance • The Event: The poster commemorates the Athens Polytechnic Uprising of November 1973, a seminal student-led protest that catalyzed the downfall of the US-backed Greek military junta (the regime of the Colonels) in 1974. • Visual Imagery: It forcefully critiques foreign intervention in Greek politics, depicting a large arm branded with "CIA" physically directing a military tank stamped with "NATO". The tank treads roll across a stylised Greek flag, leaving behind a pool of blood. • The Inscription: The Greek text at the bottom reads: which translates to "We know who is guilty and the cause is known". The text attributes the quote below to ???????? (Fotis Angoules), a prominent Greek left-wing poet. This powerful line has since transformed into a ubiquitous slogan used widely across political and social justice protests throughout Greece.
