Warhol Flowers

Warhol Flowers - Before (Poster) Fine art lithograph Flowers (1964), one of the most celebrated and instantly recognizable Pop art series by the American artist Andy Warhol. Context & Technique • The Origin: The series was conceived when Henry Geldzahler, curator at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, showed Warhol a June 1964 issue of Modern Photography magazine. Inside was a snapshot of hibiscus blossoms taken by nature photographer Patricia Caulfield. • The Transformation: Warhol appropriated Caulfield's photograph by cropping it into a tight square format. He then flattened the organic softness of the petals into high-contrast, heavily saturated graphic silhouettes, juxtaposing the neon petals against a dense, textured background of dark grass. • The Legacy: This specific colorway—featuring a delicate balance of pink, yellow, and orange blossoms over green stalks—was published as a limited offset lithograph edition of approximately 300 prints by the renowned Leo Castelli Gallery in New York. It is hand-signed and dated by the artist along the bottom edge.
