Fine art engraving This historic print portrays Tom Molineaux (1784–1818), a trailblazing African-American bare-knuckle boxer who famously fought his way out of slavery. After gaining his freedom, he moved to England, where he competed in some of the most celebrated and intense championship prizefights of the early 19th century.
The engraving shown here is a notable c. 1810 mezzotint by artist John Young, which was copied from a full-length portrait originally painted by Thomas Douglas Guest. Molineaux is famously depicted in a powerful, classic bare-knuckle stance against a coastal backdrop featuring distant ships. |
