One sheet previously mounted on linen vintage travel poster titled "See India: The Chhattar Manzil Lucknow," originally published around the 1930s to 1940s by the Government of India to promote tourism during the golden age of travel.
Artwork Details & Composition
• Subject: The poster illustrates the Bara Chhattar Manzil (Umbrella Palace), a historic palace complex built on the banks of the Gomti River in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. The name is derived from the chattris (gilt umbrella-shaped domes) crowning the pavilions.
• Visual Style: It features a striking art deco composition using a bold color palette. The palace is framed beautifully through a stone archway, reflecting onto vibrant green water where a lone boatman rows a traditional vessel.
• Production: The original color lithograph was printed in India by the famous Bolton Fine Art Offset Litho Bombay. An authentic print of this poster is preserved in the collections of institutions like the Boston Public Library. |
