TSS Caledonian Princess

TSS Caledonian Princess - Before (Poster) Royal Quad 40 x 50 This is a vintage British Railways travel poster created by artist Grainger Johnson. It advertises the roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) passenger ferry service across the Irish Sea between Scotland and Northern Ireland.Key Details of the Poster The Vessel: The image prominently features the T.S.S. Caledonian Princess, a turbine steamship built in 1961 by William Denny & Brothers. It was highly innovative for its time, featuring an on-deck turntable that allowed cars to turn around efficiently before disembarking. The Route: The poster promotes the route between Stranraer (Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland) and Larne (County Antrim, Northern Ireland). Catchphrase: The bottom of the artwork highlights its primary selling feature: "Cars Caravans and Commercial Road Vehicles Drive on Drive off at any state of the tide". Later Life: Interestingly, after retiring from ferry services in 1981, this exact ship was converted into a legendary floating nightclub on the River Tyne known as the Tuxedo Princess. It was ultimately scrapped in Turkey in 2008.
