First Aviation Meeting In England

First Aviation Meeting In England - Before (Poster) One sheet authentic vintage lithographic advertisement for the First Aviation Meeting in England, held at the Doncaster Racecourse from October 15th to 23rd, 1909. Printed by Alf Cooke, Ltd. of Leeds and London, this iconic artifact showcases the very dawn of powered human flight.Historical Significance The Pioneer Clash: In 1909, both Doncaster and Blackpool competed fiercely to host Britain's inaugural air display. While Blackpool's event received official backing from the Aero Club of Great Britain, Doncaster stubbornly pushed forward with its unsanctioned meeting. This split the aviation community and led to a dramatic, cross-county "squabble" between Yorkshire and Lancashire. Famous Aviators: The poster lists legendary early aviators who participated, including Samuel Cody (an American who became a naturalized British citizen during the event to compete for a cash prize) and Léon Delagrange, who shattered a world speed record during the meeting by lapping the course at roughly 50 mph.The Setting: The bottom of the artwork depicts the historic Doncaster horse racecourse and grandstands, over which the fragile wood-and-canvas aircraft flew.
