One sheet This is an original promotional poster for the Mystery Lodge attraction, a groundbreaking special-effects theater show that originally opened on May 28, 1994, at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, California. The Art and the Attraction The Design: The central graphic is a formline-style indigenous art piece originally created by Kwakwaka?wakw master carver Doug Cranmer for the "Spirit Lodge" pavilion at the Vancouver Expo 86 World's Fair. The Show: Produced in collaboration with BRC Imagination Arts, the live-action attraction integrated a Native American storyteller with "Holovision 3-D" technology (a modernized Pepper's Ghost optical illusion) to make smoke, shadows, and animals appear to materialize out of a real fire.Current Status Indefinitely Closed: The show suffered catastrophic technical failures and closed unexpectedly in early June 2019.The Issues: The specialized Holovision projection and lighting parts dating back to 1994 became entirely obsolete and impossible to source or replicate economically.Current Use: The physical building has since been repurposed as a venue space during seasonal park events, most notably housing a haunted maze house for the annual Knott's Scary Farm Halloween event. |
