Space Station X-1

Space Station X-1 - Before (Poster) Disneyland Attraction silkscreen poster for Space Station X-1, a classic opening day attraction in Tomorrowland at Disneyland Resort.Attraction Overview Opening Date: July 17, 1955 (Disneyland's opening day).Closing Date: February 17, 1960.Location: Tomorrowland (the footprint is currently occupied by Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters). Subsequent Name: Renamed "Satellite View of America" in 1958 during the height of the Space Race. The Experience Designed by legendary Disney artists Peter Ellenshaw and Claude Coats, Space Station X-1 was a low-cost walkthrough exhibit rather than a ride.Because actual satellite photography of Earth did not yet exist in 1955, artists painted a massive, detailed diorama of the continental United States as seen from 90 miles above. Guests stood on a central circular platform to look down at the massive artwork. Using clever blacklight manipulation and projection effects, the exhibit simulated a 3-minute orbit showing moving clouds, shifting daylight, and even a smoking forest fire.
