The film, based on the 1885 North-West Rebellion in Canada, follows Texas Ranger Dusty Rivers (played by Gary Cooper) as he travels north to arrest a fugitive. While there, he joins forces with the North-West Mounted Police and becomes entangled in a love triangle with nurse April Logan (Madeleine Carroll) and Sergeant Jim Brett (Preston Foster).

Technicolor Debut: This was DeMille's first film shot in Technicolor.

Casting Swap: The lead role was originally offered to Joel McCrea, but he traded roles with Gary Cooper so McCrea could star in Foreign Correspondent instead.
