An Engine Is Wheeled

An Engine Is Wheeled (Poster) Antikbar royal quad 40 x 50 vintage British Railways poster from around 1949 titled "An Engine is Wheeled," featuring artwork by the notable British artist Terence Cuneo. Description Scene The poster depicts a busy, light-filled industrial scene inside the Derby Locomotive Works erecting shop. Sunlight streams through the high windows, illuminating a hive of activity where skilled workers in overalls are engaged in maintaining steam locomotives. Central Action In the center of the image, a large BR Standard 2-6-4 tank engine is suspended in mid-air by a powerful overhead crane. Below it, workers are meticulously guiding a set of enormous black driving wheels into place for installation onto the engine's chassis, a process known as "wheeling". Atmosphere and Style The painting is known for its meticulous detail, capturing the engineering prowess and industrial spirit of the era. Cuneo's work conveys a sense of realism, dynamism, and pride in the craftsmanship of the British railway industry. Historical Context Commissioned by British Railways, the poster served as a promotional tool to showcase the expertise and capabilities of their workshops to the public. As with many of Cuneo's railway paintings, a tiny, hidden mouse is often present somewhere in the artwork, which became his trademark signature.
