The Grateful Dead

The Grateful Dead - After (Poster) Concert poster concert poster advertising a pair of shows by The Grateful Dead, the Steve Miller Blues Band, and Moby Grape at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco, CA, on December 23 and 24, 1966. The poster is a well-known psychedelic work of art by Victor Moscoso, cataloged as FD-40 in the Family Dog series. Poster Details Artist: Victor Moscoso Venue: Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco Dates: December 23 & 24, 1966 Headliner: The Grateful Dead Supporting Acts: Moby Grape and the Steve Miller Blues Band Nickname: It is often referred to by collectors as "Hippie Santa Claus" due to the time of year, or "The Satanic Santa" by the artist himself because of the small horns on the central figure. Historical Significance This was the only poster that Victor Moscoso designed for the Grateful Dead. The central image of a horned Santa Claus-like figure was adapted by Moscoso from an 1881 drawing of "Merry Old Santa Claus" by cartoonist Thomas Nast. These concerts were significant at the time, with original first-printing posters now considered valuable collector's items, sometimes fetching thousands of dollars at auction.
