George Giusti for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, State Forest Service.
Year: The poster was produced in 1945, during or just after World War II, when the prevention of forest fires was considered vital to the war effort and national security.
Message: The central instruction is to "Put your pipe ashes in bare earth" to prevent accidental fires. This type of messaging was common in the era, particularly when smoking products were more popular.
Context: This campaign was part of the Cooperative Forest Fire Prevention program which eventually led to the famous Smokey Bear campaign. Smokey Bear's first poster was in 1944, and his official slogan "Only YOU Can Prevent Forest Fires" was coined in 1947. |
