Halfsheet Jupiter's Darling
is a 1955 American musical romance film released by MGM, directed by George Sidney, and based on the 1927 play The Road to Rome by Robert E. Sherwood. The film was the last musical made at MGM for star Esther Williams and also her final aquatic film.
Plot Summary
Set in 216 B.C., the story follows the Carthaginian general Hannibal (Howard Keel) as he marches on Rome with his army and war elephants. The Roman dictator Fabius Maximus (George Sanders) frets about a defense, while his beautiful and spirited fiancée, Amytis (Esther Williams), decides to visit Hannibal's camp out of curiosity. She is captured but manages to charm Hannibal, strategically delaying his attack on Rome while he falls under her spell. The story is a satirical anti-war comedy that features an elaborate underwater ballet sequence and a high-speed chariot chase.
