| | Lobby Card, Isle of the Dead
is a 1945 American horror film directed by Mark Robson and produced by Val Lewton.
Plot Summary
Set in Greece during the 1912 Balkan War, the film follows a Greek general, Nikolas Pherides (Boris Karloff), who visits a small island to pay his respects at his wife's grave. He finds the island is not uninhabited as he thought, and soon a plague breaks out, forcing him and the other residents to quarantine. The isolated group is faced with a psychological conflict between rational science and local superstitions about a mythical vampire-like demon known as a "vorvolaka". As the plague takes its toll, the general begins to believe the claims of a superstitious housekeeper (Helene Thimig) that a young woman (Ellen Drew) is the vorvolaka, leading to paranoia and a tense climax.
