One sheet previously mounted, "It's Time to Go South for Winter Sunshine"
is a vintage travel poster for the Southern Railway. The poster was designed by Leonard Cusden in 1931. A similar poster for the Southern Railway with a similar theme, "Winter Sunshine", was created by Herbert Edmond Vaughan in 1929.
The posters were part of an advertising campaign to encourage people to travel to the south of England to escape the colder weather. The campaign was known for using the slogan "The Sunshine Line". The Art Deco style poster by Cusden uses a visual metaphor of a man leaving a dreary, rainy city scene and stepping into the sun, which is represented by a bright yellow triangle. The image of a train heading upwards also reinforces the message of a journey to a brighter destination. |
