is a 1957 American epic historical romance film directed by Edward Dmytryk and distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The film stars Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor, and Eva Marie Saint.
The story, based on Ross Lockridge Jr.'s 1948 novel, is set during the American Civil War. It centers on John Shawnessy (Clift), an idealistic teacher and poet from Indiana, and his troubled marriage to Susanna Drake (Taylor), a Southern belle with emotional instability, against the backdrop of the war.
Raintree County was one of the first films shot in MGM Camera 65, an anamorphic widescreen process. Elizabeth Taylor received her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her performance. |
