The Missed Leap

After Fine art by John Stueart Curry, The Missed Leap is a 1934 lithograph by the American Regionalist artist John Steuart Curry. The print depicts two acrobats in a moment of dramatic tension, with one falling towards a net while the other reaches out to catch them. In 1932, Curry spent several weeks traveling with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, creating sketches and studies that would later serve as the basis for a number of his paintings and lithographs, including this one. The work is part of his larger body of circus-themed art. The dramatic lighting and the perilous subject matter have been interpreted as symbolic of the precariousness of life during the Great Depression. The lithograph was published in an edition of approximately 250, with the first 100 being numbered. Several prints of this work have been sold at auction or are available from art galleries and online marketplaces.
