Diploma, Diploma of the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary
This document is a "Testimonial of Reception" into a Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A sodality is a Roman Catholic Marian society that was founded in 1563 by a Belgian Jesuit, Jean Leunis, for his students. The word "sodality" comes from the Latin word sodalitas, which means "companionship" or "fellowship".
The purpose of a sodality is to foster a strong devotion to the Virgin Mary, increase personal holiness, and encourage charitable work among its members. The document states that the recipient was "received into the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin" after a period of probation and is now a "partaker of all the indulgences, favors, graces and privileges" of the organization. The Sodality at the Roman College was made a "Prima Primaria," or head sodality, and was given the authority to grant its privileges and indulgences to other sodalities that affiliated with it. |
