The film is a science-fiction crime thriller directed by Grigori Kromanov and is based on a 1970 novel of the same name by brothers Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, who also wrote the screenplay. The Strugatsky brothers are also known for writing the novel Roadside Picnic, which was adapted into the film Stalker by Andrei Tarkovsky. The movie is often praised for its unique visual style and electronic soundtrack by Sven Grünberg. The plot follows a police inspector named Peter Glebsky who is called to a remote mountain hotel for what turns out to be a false alarm. When an avalanche traps him and the other guests, a series of strange and supernatural events begin to unfold. The film has been described as a "stylish hybrid of science-fiction/crime and neo-noir".
