The Painted Veil Window Card, The film, which stars Greta Garbo, Herbert Marshall, and George Brent, is a drama based on the 1925 novel of the same name by W. Somerset Maugham. It was directed by Richard Boleslawski and produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The plot follows a woman named Katrin (Greta Garbo) who, after marrying a bacteriologist named Walter Fane (Herbert Marshall), moves with him to Hong Kong. Feeling neglected by her husband, Katrin begins a love affair with a diplomatic attaché, Jack Townsend (George Brent). When Walter discovers the affair, he takes a job in a remote Chinese village battling a cholera epidemic and forces Katrin to accompany him. There, their relationship is tested, and Katrin undergoes a personal transformation.
