The plot of the movie centers on a giant, radioactive octopus that is awakened by nuclear testing in the Pacific Ocean. The octopus begins attacking ships and submarines along the North American Pacific Coast before making its way to San Francisco, where it attacks the Golden Gate Bridge and other landmarks.
The film stars Kenneth Tobey as Commander Pete Mathews, Faith Domergue as Professor Lesley Joyce, and Donald Curtis as Dr. John Carter. The special effects of the giant octopus were created using stop-motion animation by Ray Harryhausen.
