Crimea

Mounted Halfsheet, vintage travel poster for Crimea, created by the Soviet state travel agency, Intourist. The poster is believed to have been designed by artist Sergei Sakharov around 1935. The central focus of the poster is the Swallow's Nest castle, a decorative neo-Gothic castle built between 1911 and 1912 on the Aurora Cliff near the town of Gaspra on the Crimean peninsula. It is one of Crimea's most famous landmarks and has become a symbol of the southern coastline. The poster advertises tours to the USSR arranged by Intourist, listing offices in New York, Boston, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Intourist was founded in 1929 and served as the official and exclusive travel agency for foreign visitors to the Soviet Union. The agency's posters and brochures were designed to promote a positive image of the USSR to Western audiences, often using Western Art Deco styles to depict a tourist paradise. Intourist was privatized in 1992 following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
