The Patriot

Mounted Small, The Patriot is a 2000 American epic historical drama war film directed by Roland Emmerich and written by Robert Rodat. Plot Summary Set in South Carolina in 1776, the film follows Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson), a veteran of the French and Indian War who is a widower with seven children. When his eldest son, Gabriel (Heath Ledger), joins the Continental Army to fight in the American Revolutionary War, Benjamin initially abstains from fighting. However, after a cruel British officer, Colonel William Tavington (Jason Isaacs), murders one of his sons and arrests Gabriel, Benjamin is driven to lead a colonial militia in a guerrilla war against the British army to protect his family and seek revenge. The film's plot is loosely based on a composite of several historical figures, including Francis Marion, Daniel Morgan, and Thomas Sumter.
