The fair's theme was "Building the World of Tomorrow," which is a phrase also found on the poster. The poster's design features the fair's central architectural symbols: the Trylon and the Perisphere.
The Trylon was a 610-foot-tall, spire-shaped obelisk.
The Perisphere was a large, 180-foot-wide sphere.
Inside the Perisphere, visitors could view an exhibit called "Democracity," a diorama depicting a utopian city of the future.
The fair itself was held in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park in Queens, New York, and introduced many technological and cultural innovations to the public, including television, fluorescent lighting, and nylon. The original poster was designed by Joseph Binder.
