Vernon Home

After Crate Label, Vernon Home is a brand of vintage citrus crate labels used by the Tustin Hills Citrus Association in Tustin, California. The label, which dates to the 1950s, features an image of George Washington's home, Mount Vernon. The Tustin Hills Citrus Association was a cooperative of growers organized in 1909 to market their fruit. The packing house was built in 1910 and was one of the largest in Tustin. The association was a member of the Southern California Fruit Exchange, which later became Sunkist. The Tustin Hills Citrus Association closed in December 1963, as orange orchards were replaced by houses due to the growth of Orange County. Vintage crate labels like the "Vernon Home" brand were a key part of advertising citrus fruits before the widespread use of cardboard boxes. These labels, often featuring colorful and scenic designs, were used to establish brand identity and generate customer loyalty for a product.
