Secret Agent

Mounted Book Page, Secret Agent is a 1936 British spy thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The film was produced by Gaumont-British and is based on a play by Campbell Dixon, which in turn is loosely based on two stories from W. Somerset Maugham's 1927 collection Ashenden: Or the British Agent. The movie stars John Gielgud as Edgar Brodie, a British agent operating under the name Richard Ashenden, and Madeleine Carroll as his fellow agent Elsa Carrington, who poses as his wife. They are joined by Peter Lorre, who plays an eccentric assassin known as "The General". The film's plot revolves around the agents' mission to locate and eliminate a German spy in Switzerland during World War I. Robert Young also appears in the film as an American admirer of Elsa. The film has a runtime of 86 minutes and was voted the fifth-best British film of 1936.
