Red Elephant

Mounted Halfsheet, The image displays a depiction of a red elephant on a yellow background, which was the flag of the Kingdom of Laos. The flag of the Kingdom of Laos featured a three-headed white elephant, known as Airavata or Erawan, under a ceremonial parasol on a red field. The version with the red elephant on a yellow background is a less common depiction but still associated with Laos and the symbol of the elephant as a national emblem. The elephant has a long history in the region and is a symbol of the former kingdom of Lan Xang, meaning "Land of a Million Elephants". The royal symbol of the three-headed elephant represented the three former kingdoms that made up Laos: Luang Prabang, Vientiane, and Champasak. The red elephant on a yellow background also appears on the flag of the Kingdom of Luang Prabang, a former kingdom in what is now Laos, and on the flag of the Kingdom of Wiang Chhan from 1707–1828. This symbol was also used on some historical flags of Siam (modern-day Thailand), where a white elephant was prominently featured on a red background.
