Daybill, Chinatown
is a 1974 American neo-noir film directed by Roman Polanski and starring Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway. The screenplay, written by Robert Towne, won an Academy Award and is regarded as one of the best ever written. The movie is set in 1937 Los Angeles and follows private investigator J.J. "Jake" Gittes, played by Nicholson, as he uncovers a complex web of deceit, corruption, and murder related to the city's water supply. The film's themes were inspired by the real-life historical disputes known as the California Water Wars.
