Lobby Card, The Invisible Man
is a 1933 American science fiction horror film directed by James Whale and based on the 1897 novel of the same name by H.G. Wells. The film stars Claude Rains in his screen debut as the titular character, with Gloria Stuart and William Harrigan also appearing in key roles.
The plot follows Dr. Jack Griffin, a scientist who discovers a serum that makes him invisible. However, the same drug that makes him invisible also slowly drives him to homicidal insanity. Covered in bandages and dark glasses to conceal his identity, he takes lodging in a small English village. When his secret is discovered, he flees and embarks on a "reign of terror," committing acts of violence and murder. The police, his former mentor, and his fiancée Flora Cranley struggle to find a way to capture a person they cannot see.
The film is praised for its groundbreaking special effects, which were created by John P. Fulton and are considered impressive even today. In 2008, the film was selected for the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". |
