Dr Syntax

After Small Engraving, Doctor Syntax Stopt by Highwaymen is a print created by the English artist and caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson on May 1, 1812. The image depicts a scene from the satirical poem The Tour of Doctor Syntax in Search of the Picturesque, written by William Combe. This print shows the fictional character Doctor Syntax, a foolish clergyman and schoolmaster, being attacked by highwaymen during his travels. Rowlandson's illustrations for the poem were widely popular and helped define the character of Dr. Syntax. The series of prints satirized the "Picturesque" movement, an aesthetic concept popular in late 18th-century Britain that praised irregular natural forms and influenced garden design.
