George

Mounted One sheet, magic, stone litho, " George, The Supreme Master of Magic" is a vintage advertising poster for the American magician Grover George, who lived from 1887 to 1958. The poster was created around 1928 or 1929 by the Otis Lithograph Company in Cleveland, Ohio. The poster advertises George's "Triumphant American Tour" and mentions his troupe of "18 people" and "carload of scenic effects". This tour was meant to be a grand return to the United States after a successful five-year tour of Central and South America. However, the tour was not a success due to a rival magician, Howard Thurston, who was determined to maintain his dominance and filed lawsuits against George, ultimately leading to George's retirement in Brazil. The poster itself is known for its intricate details and vibrant colors, depicting George performing a card trick surrounded by exotic and fantastical imagery, including devils, a witch, and a scene with the pyramids of Egypt.
