		Halfsheet, Cross of Iron
is a 1977 war film directed by Sam Peckinpah, starring James Coburn, Maximilian Schell, James Mason, and David Warner. The film is based on the novel The Willing Flesh by Willi Heinrich.
Movie Summary
Set on the Eastern Front in late 1943, the film tells the story of a battle-hardened German non-commissioned officer, Corporal Rolf Steiner (played by James Coburn), and the newly-arrived, aristocratic Captain Hauptmann Stransky (Maximilian Schell). Stransky is obsessed with winning the prestigious Iron Cross and is willing to take credit for the achievements of others to get it. A conflict arises between the two men after Steiner refuses to lie for Stransky's fabricated claim of heroism. The film's story is told from the German perspective, a rare approach for war films at the time. |
