Concert Poster, performance of the play "
The Beard" by Michael McClure at the Fillmore Auditorium on Sunday, July 24, 1966. The artwork was designed by Wes Wilson, a prominent figure in the psychedelic art movement of the 1960s. This performance was presented by Bill Graham and was a one-time theatrical event rather than a musical concert, part of a series of performances that "pushed the envelope of popular prurience".
The play itself was a controversial work that imagined a confrontation between two legendary figures, Billy the Kid and Jean Harlow. Its productions were often subject to legal action due to profane language and a simulated sexual act at the climax of the play. The poster is identified as BG-19 in the Bill Graham numbered series and is considered a collectible item, with various printings and handbills existing |
