About the Performer and the Poster
Real Name: Kar-Mi was the stage name of Joseph Bryant Hallworth (1872–1956), an American vaudeville and circus entertainer.
Stunts: He was known for a number of dangerous and spectacular acts, including sword-swallowing, knife-throwing, sharpshooting, and mind-reading. His other famous tricks included swallowing a loaded gun barrel and an illusion called "Selma," where he cremated and revived a female assistant.
Poster Information: The posters often presented him as an "Indian fakir" or "prince of India," which was a common performance style at the time. Hallworth was known for his resourcefulness, sometimes simply pasting his new stage name over old posters to save money. Stone Litho |
