Fine art print on board poster featuring Frida Kahlo's 1945 painting "
Self-Portrait with Small Monkey". The poster also advertises an exhibition of her work at Plaza de la Raza, which took place from January 17 through March 29, 1987.
The painting, also known as "Autorretrato con changuito" in Spanish, depicts Kahlo with a monkey, a xoloitzcuintli dog, and a pre-Columbian sculpture. Kahlo often included animals in her self-portraits, and her pets, such as her spider monkey Fulang-Chang, were seen as companions or symbolic stand-ins for the children she was unable to have. The dog, a Xoloitzcuintli, was considered a sacred animal in Aztec culture, believed to guide souls through the underworld. The painting is part of the Dolores Olmedo Collection in Mexico City.
The 1987 exhibition at Plaza de la Raza was the first solo exhibition of Frida Kahlo's work in Los Angeles, featuring 18 paintings and 7 drawings from the private collection of Dolores Olmedo PatiƱo. |
