Plot Summary
The film follows the tragic life of Holly Parker (Lana Turner), a woman from a lower-class background who marries a wealthy, ambitious politician. Her overbearing mother-in-law (Constance Bennett) blackmails her into faking her own death and abandoning her husband and young son after an accidental death occurs in her home.
Holly then spends years in Europe, sinking into poverty, alcoholism, and despair. Eventually, she is blackmailed by a con man (Burgess Meredith) who threatens to expose her past to her now-governor husband. Holly murders the blackmailer to protect her family's reputation and is arrested. Refusing to reveal her identity in court, she is known only as "Madame X". In a twist of fate, her defense attorney is her adult son, who is unaware of her true identity. The film is a classic tearjerker focusing on themes of motherly love and sacrifice. |
