Famous Monsters of Filmland

After Oil Painting maquette magazine cover art This artwork is concept art for the 1982 fantasy film The Dark Crystal, directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz. The characters and world for the film were designed by the acclaimed fantasy illustrator Brian Froud. The painting features characters from the film: Top: A Skeksis, the villainous, vulture-like rulers of the world of Thra. Bottom Right: Likely one of the Mystics (also known as UrRu), the peaceful counterparts to the Skeksis. Bottom Left: Another Mystic. This illustration captures the unique, intricate puppet design aesthetic that the film is famous for, which was a significant cinematic achievement at the time as the first live-action film to feature no human characters.
