Attraction, aviation, aircraft, airplane advertisement for the
Convair 880 jet airliner, produced by the Convair division of General Dynamics. It was designed by the acclaimed Swiss graphic designer Erik Nitsche in 1960 as part of a famous corporate advertising campaign.
Poster Details
Subject: The Convair 880 was marketed as the "world's fastest jetliner," capable of speeds up to 615 mph (990 km/h).
Design: Erik Nitsche used the abstract geometric style of the "Swiss International Style" to evoke dynamism and innovation. The colored lines in the graphic symbolize air routes around the world.
Campaign Context: Nitsche became the art director for General Dynamics in 1955. The Convair 880 poster was part of a series of highly symbolic posters, including the "Atoms for Peace" campaign, which aimed to portray the engineering company as forward-thinking and peaceful.
Commercial History: Despite the bold marketing, the Convair 880 project was a financial failure for General Dynamics. Only 65 units were produced between 1959 and 1962, as the aircraft faced stiff competition from the more popular Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8 models. |
