General Dynamics

After Attraction size vintage TRIGA General Atomic poster from 1958, designed by the acclaimed Swiss graphic designer Erik Nitsche. The poster was created as part of the "Atoms for Peace" campaign for General Dynamics, a major American defense contractor. Design and Context Purpose: The poster was displayed at the second International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy in Geneva in September 1958. Its goal was to promote the TRIGA safe nuclear reactor for training and research purposes, shifting the public narrative of atomic energy away from weaponry. Design: Nitsche was the art director for General Dynamics from 1955 to 1960 and his work in this campaign became an icon of mid-1950s graphic design. Imagery: The design uses a photograph of a TRIGA reactor core, overlaid with abstract blue circles and dynamic lines, evoking a sense of scientific progress and the future. The blue color scheme is inspired by the Cherenkov radiation's blue glow, which appears in the water around the reactor core. Acronym: TRIGA stands for Training, Research, Isotopes, General Atomics
