The film is a police procedural drama that takes place over the course of a single night. Liz Taggart (Natalie Wood), the daughter of a police captain (Brian Donlevy), is kidnapped while out with her boyfriend. A psychotic man (Raymond Burr) stalks and abducts her after knocking out her date in a "lovers' lane".
