Balsam French Grande vintage poster for "Balsam Apéritif au Quinquina", created in 1923 by the French illustrator Jean D'Ylen. It was commissioned by the Belgian distillery F.X. de Beukelaer. Distillery: F.X. de Beukelaer, a Belgian family-owned distillery founded in Antwerp in 1863, still known for its Elixir d'Anvers liqueur. Product: "Balsam," an aperitif and digestive liqueur made with cinchona bark (quinquina), which provides quinine. Quinine was historically used to treat malaria and aid digestion.
