Small french one panel reproduction. famous 1892 lithograph poster
"Reine de Joie" (Queen of Joy) by French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. It was created as an advertisement for a controversial novel of the same name by author Victor Joze.
Artwork Details
Artist: Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (French, 1864–1901)
Date: 1892
Medium: Color lithograph
Significance: The poster is a key example of Post-Impressionist commercial art and part of the Art Nouveau movement. It depicts a scene from Joze's novel, which explored the risqué nightlife of Montmartre and class distinctions in Paris.
Controversy: The poster and novel were controversial for their portrayal of a wealthy, elderly banker as a negative, anti-Semitic stereotype, and for depicting a flamboyant courtesan using his wealth. The character was widely recognized as a caricature of the real Baron Alphonse de Rothschild, whose friends reportedly tore the posters down from bookshop walls in protest. |
