Date: The battle was fought over two days, February 22–23, 1847.
Location: It took place near the Hacienda (estate) of Buena Vista, a village south of Saltillo, in the state of Coahuila, Mexico. The specific location was a narrow mountain pass locally known as "La Angostura".
Commanders: U.S. forces were led by General Zachary Taylor, while the much larger Mexican Army was commanded by General Antonio López de Santa Anna.
Outcome: Both sides claimed victory, but the battle is generally considered a U.S. victory or a U.S. successful defense because the Mexican army retreated during the night, leaving the U.S. forces in control of the battlefield.
Significance: The victory secured northern Mexico for the U.S. and made General Taylor a national hero, which helped him win the U.S. presidency in 1848. |
