The film is a romantic comedy about a wealthy French farmer, Lucien D'Artois (Adolphe Menjou), who is married to Germaine (Virginia Valli) through an arrangement. When Germaine leaves him because she finds his rustic lifestyle unbearable, Lucien moves to Paris to become a sophisticated "boulevardier" and win her back. He starts living a frivolous lifestyle, eventually stealing a nightclub girl named Fox Trot (Louise Brooks) from Lazarre (Noah Beery). After Lucien loses all his fortune, everything he owns is seized except a single suit of evening clothes. Germaine eventually returns to him in his bare apartment. |
